Art Can Heal Your Brain

In this presentation, neuroscience researcher Mark Waldman will show how this myth began by studying the art of those committed to asylums in the 18th and 19th Centuries.
But recent brain-scan studies show how creative expression actually helps to reduce the neurological “chaos” that lies dormant in everyone. Creative people have unique brains and they see, hear, and feel the world in surprisingly different ways. But for anyone who wrestles with their “inner demons,” creative activities heal the brain faster than traditional therapy and pills.
We’ll also explore synesthesia, a unique brain phenomenon where sounds are heard as colors, and colors are experienced as flavors. Meet Your Trainer: Christopher Van Buren
Christopher Van Buren is a California artist who left the United States for Brazil, where he spent seven years traveling the country, learning about the art world in South America and acquiring galleries to represent his work. His work appears in many private collections, including the noteworthy collection of a Brazilian state senator. He appeared on Brazilian TV in a feature about artist’s studios and participated in several exhibits in galleries, business locations, and educational institutions. His work was also featured in architectural showcases.
